What is Survey?
Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi
Ed Burns's Brothers McMullen
Shane Carruth's Primer
Though nothing like these movies in terms of plot, all three helped inspire Survey because they each have proven that it is possible for someone who lives far from California with no Hollywood connections to scrape together enough money (Robert Rodriguez most famously for renting his body to science) to go out and make their own movie, in their own way, and be successful both artistically as well as financially.
Like the films mentioned above, Survey is an extremely independent, lower-than-low-budget feature. But where El Mariachi is action, Brothers is a romantic comedy, and Primer is a science fiction puzzler, Survey falls most comfortably under the heading of thriller:
Synopsis
With a potentially career-making presentation looming,
Jarrod knew that it would be a hectic day at work, so he is understandably
annoyed when someone who claims to be conducting a survey for her college psych
class interrupts his preparation.
Assured that it will be brief, Jarrod forces his annoyance aside and
agrees to participate only to be taken aback by her final question:
If you caught your spouse with their lover, which one would you
kill?
Jarrod has no idea of the consequences of his answer. He has no idea that the life of his neglected
wife hangs in the balance. He especially
doesn’t know that his questioner has been spying on his every move for weeks.
But, as the story unfolds in real time, Jarrod learns many
things about his wife, himself, and, most importantly, the woman named Toni who
is conducting the survey.
As Jarrod moves from disbelief to bargaining to anger to
finally arrive at acceptance, Toni strips him of all control, forces him to
embarrass himself, and breaks him down little by little until his deepest, darkest
secrets are laid bare.
etc...
